What is Disc Golf?
Disc Golf is just what it sounds like. The game of golf played with a flying
disc, also known as a frisbee. Golf discs are much different from the frisbees
that are used for playing catch and other games, as they are typically
heavier and have a sleeker profile, which allows the disc to be thrown
much faster and farther. A disc golf green does not need to be meticulously
groomed like a ball golf green, since the disc is putted into a basket
mounted on a pole, rather than rolled along the ground. The game is also
different from ball golf in that it is much less expensive to play. A beginner
can quickly catch on to the game with only one or two discs, which cost
about $8 each; a putter (Aviar is a good one) and a driver (Stingray is
good for lighter arms, and a Cheetah is a good beginner disc for stronger
arms). Very few courses charge greens fees (Holmes park does not). In spite
of the differences, disc golf is just as addictive as ball golf!
If you are interested in learning more about the game, come to Holmes
park on a Tuesday evening or Saturday morning, and you'll be sure to find
someone who will loan you some discs and introduce you to disc golf
